This humiliating event prompted Jolique
to scratch her head in wonder at the curious codes of dress enforced
by many Euro-American institutions and recreation establishments.
Consider, for example, these dress code regulations, published by
the Glencoe Golf & Country
Club of Calgary, Alberta:
It is required that all members and
their guests wear suitable attire at all times on the course and
in and around the Clubhouse. Members are expected to dress tastefully
in a manner appropriate to private golf clubs. As dress is a personal
matter and as contemporary golfing attire changes from time to time,
any questions regarding the acceptability of any particular apparel
can be reviewed with the Professional staff. Management has the
right to request any person to leave The Glencoe Golf & Country
Club premises if he or she, in the opinion of the management, is
not suitably attired.
Gentlemen
Required Dress: golf slacks, golf
shirt (polo style or dress collar style), sweater or pullover,
jacket and rain gear. Tailored shorts generally of a style and
kind sold in the Golf Shop are acceptable. Prohibited Dress: sleeveless
shirts, fishnet shirts, no shirts, shirts without collars, shirts
with garish, gaudy or vulgar slogans or advertising, sweatshirts
and sweatpants. Blue jeans, cutoffs, gym shorts or any shorts
having an inseam less than five inches. Gentlemen are not allowed
to wear sports headwear in the Dining Room, Spike Lounge, or Family
Lounge.
*** Metal Spikes are not allowed
Ladies
Required Dress: shirts, culottes,
slacks, golf shirts, and blouses, sweater or pullover, jacket
and rain gear. Tailored shorts generally of a style and kind sold
in the Golf Shop are acceptable, as are styled leisure suits.
Prohibited Dress: short skirts, tank tops, fishnet tops, halters,
shirts with garish, gaudy or vulgar slogans or advertising, sweat
suits, blue jeans, cut-offs, gym shorts, or any short having an
inseam less than 5 inches.
*** Metal Spikes are not allowed
These regulations offer proof that
"modesty" and "appropriateness" are arbitrary and relative terms,
dependent upon, among other things, time, place, and gender. For
example, sweatshirts and sweatpants are sport clothing designed
to facilitate active physical movement, while simultaneously absorbing
sweat generated from such exertion. Granted, golf is not the most
physically demanding sport, but it does require the body to perform
expansive movements at tee-time. Under these circumstances, it seems
the body would be perfectly comfortable in loose-fitting clothing
such as sweatpants and shirts, but these items of clothing are prohibited
on the Glencoe course.
